Scalamandre Construction

Scalamandre Construction is a general contractor and heavy civil builder based in Freeport, New York, working across the New York metropolitan area since 1923. The firm builds for public transportation and aviation clients as well as private owners, with a portfolio that runs to transit facilities, airport work at the region’s major terminals, marine and waterfront structures, roadways and institutional buildings. Its client list includes New York State agencies, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and commercial airline tenants. Scalamandre works as prime contractor on publicly bid infrastructure packages and is among the New York-area firms positioned for the region’s ongoing transit and terminal reconstruction programs.

The operating company behind the brand is Peter Scalamandre & Sons, Inc., generally shortened to PSSI, and its own numbers are worth reading before the project list: 103 years of experience, a 0.74 experience modification rate, and more than 500 team members.

What separates PSSI from most New York general contractors is vertical integration. The group rents specialty civil construction equipment, and has done since 1923. It batches ready mix concrete to individual project specifications. It runs an interstate trucking business hauling bulk cement products, and Sea Crest handles hauling of construction materials and debris. Crushing operations sit alongside the fleet. Sea Crest Construction operates as the general contracting arm. Owning the fleet, the trucking, the concrete and the crushing is what allows the firm to describe itself as the region’s top heavy civil contractor rather than a broker of subcontracts.

The experience is segmented by duration in each market, which is a more honest measure than a single founding date. More than 90 years as a commercial civil contractor. More than 75 years as a general contractor across private commercial and municipal buildings. Heavy highway work since the 1970s, with over 30 years of highway bridge construction on top of it. More than 25 years operating continuously at the city’s busiest airports, completing over 700 million dollars of work for the Port Authority and premium private airline clients. More than 30 years building power and water treatment facilities for municipal and private owners.

Transit work runs through deep coordination with LIRR, NYCT MTA and Amtrak. Named projects give the spread: design-build for the JetBlue Yellow Garage and the Terminal 5 elevated roadway, Delta Terminal 4 expansion packages and Concourse E and F paving and foundations, the Bay Park Sewage Treatment Plant grit removal facility and Phase E3, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice expansion, Nassau County Correctional Facility, the United States Military Academy at West Point, reconstruction of the Long Island Expressway between exits 57 and 61, the LIRR Enhanced Stations Initiative, elevators to the Roosevelt Island tram station, and the Jones Beach Energy and Nature Center.
