Metcalf Builders

Metcalf Builders is a Reno general contractor that Tom Metcalf and his father, N.L. “Red” Metcalf, a longtime Charles Pankow superintendent, started in Carson City in 1994. It’s a family of carpenters by trade. The company worked across Nevada before stretching into other states, then spent years building hotels and resorts, and it rebranded simply as Metcalf in 2022. Today it builds healthcare, hospitality, multifamily, retail and industrial projects and holds licenses in six Western states. Its biggest current job is Skyline Flats in north Reno, a 402-unit affordable community for Dominium spread across 14 buildings and 570,663 square feet, with completion set for January 2029. That’s a large income-restricted project for northern Nevada.

Licensed in six states, two billion dollars built

Two figures define the reach. Metcalf Builders states more than $2 billion in completed construction projects, and licensure in Arizona, California, Idaho, Nevada, Utah and Washington. Six-state licensure is the practical qualifier for an owner with sites spread across the interior West, because it removes the delay of qualifying a contractor in a new jurisdiction.

The company works for both public and private sector clients, which are different procurement worlds, and it is headquartered in Reno while describing projects completed in markets throughout the country.

How it positions itself is around the pre-construction relationship rather than the build. The firm describes partnering with owners, developers and design teams from concept through completion, balancing cost, quality and schedule, and attributes outcomes to clear communication and disciplined planning. It also makes an argument that regional knowledge is a risk control: enough experience in these markets to anticipate problems and develop solutions before they land on a schedule.

Work splits between new construction and renovation, delivered as general contracting or construction management, and the sectors named are healthcare, hospitality, multi-family, retail and industrial. The healthcare and hospitality pairing is notable because both involve building around operating facilities and strict handover conditions.

The published site structure gives a sense of how the company presents itself: separate pages for history, leadership, philosophy, community involvement, and news and updates, with careers run alongside. A contractor that keeps a community involvement page current is usually one with long-standing local trade relationships, which matters when subcontractor capacity is tight.

Its tagline, used with a trademark symbol, is Together We Are Building the Future, and its stated frame is that what it builds and how it builds contributes to the potential of its people, clients and communities. Sources: metcalfbuilders.com homepage and About page.
