McCownGordon Construction

McCownGordon Construction is an employee-owned construction management and general contracting firm founded in Kansas City, Missouri in 1999. It works across commercial, healthcare, education, civic, industrial and manufacturing, and sports and entertainment, with offices in Kansas City, Wichita, Manhattan and Dallas. In September 2026 the firm was named construction manager at risk in joint venture with Mortenson for the Kansas City Royals’ $1.9 billion ballpark at Crown Center, an open-air venue of roughly 1.25 million square feet and about 34,000 seats on a tight downtown site. Chairman and chief executive Ramin Cherafat leads the company. Its self-perform capability in concrete and carpentry is unusual among CM firms of its size.

What a construction manager can actually take on is a question of delivery method, and McCownGordon supports four. Construction management at risk is the firm’s most common route on public and institutional work. Design-build brings the contractor, architects and trade partners together early and sets a guaranteed maximum price near the front of the process. Integrated project delivery is offered for owners who want a shared-risk contract. And through the firm’s manufacturing arm, EPC services cover engineering, procurement and construction as a single package.

Preconstruction here goes past estimating. The service includes feasibility studies, financing analysis and ROI analysis, plus a real-time estimating practice that updates cost as the design moves rather than at fixed milestones. Everything up to groundbreaking sits in this phase.

A separate in-house group, Building Performance Solutions, is staffed with engineers, architects and licensed commissioning professionals. It handles commissioning, MEP services, structural and soils work, quality assurance and quality control, and sustainability — scopes most construction managers subcontract out. Virtual design and construction sits alongside it, and the technology team runs drone footage and 360-degree photography for schedule tracking, then trains owners and trade partners on the tools rather than keeping them internal.

The market list is long: corporate, civic, K-12 and higher education, healthcare, life sciences, mission critical and advanced facilities, federal, cultural, hospitality and housing, philanthropic, retail and mixed-use, sports and recreation, and sustainable projects. The manufacturing group works nationally, with food and beverage, life sciences and industrial as core segments and full turnkey installations available coast to coast.

Safety carries its own claim: an experience modification rate below the industry average and nearly two million work hours without a lost-time incident.

Offices are at 850 Main Street in Kansas City, 1880 Kimball Avenue in Manhattan, 255 N. Mead in Wichita, and 5700 Granite Parkway in Plano for the Dallas-Fort Worth market.

Subcontractors seeking work submit through a trade partner prequalification form. Owners scoping a project can start with the firm’s online project planning tool or call 888-304-4929.
