Manafort Brothers Inc.

Manafort Brothers started in 1919 as the New Britain House Wrecking Company and took its current name in 1946, when James Manafort’s four sons ran it. It’s still family-owned, now in its fourth generation, and still based in Plainville, Conn. Demolition is the root of the business, and the firm worked at Ground Zero in 2001, but today it’s a heavy self-performing contractor in concrete, civil and utility work, highways and bridges, rail and transit, and nuclear decommissioning. Regional offices sit in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Pennsylvania. Manafort was the apparent low bidder, at about $61.8 million, on CTDOT’s Enfield station and track package for the Hartford Line, which includes a new Main Street rail bridge and 4,400 feet of realigned track.

Seven capability lines make up the current business, and only one of them is demolition. The others are nuclear decommissioning, concrete, civil and utility construction, rail and mass transit, highways and bridges, remediation and abatement, and alternative project delivery. Nuclear decommissioning is the outlier worth noting: it is licensed, heavily regulated work that very few regional contractors take on at all.

Two named divisions sit alongside the core company, Manafort Precision and Manafort Transit, the latter matching the rail and mass transit capability. The firm describes itself as a specialty, prime and design-build contractor, meaning it will take a single trade package, hold the prime contract, or carry design and construction together.

The footprint is New England and the Northeast corridor. The Plainville headquarters sits at 414 New Britain Avenue, with regional offices in Worcester, Massachusetts and Cumberland, Rhode Island. Project and office locations published on the site also reach into Pennsylvania.

Having passed its 100-year mark, the company keeps a company history section and a dedicated 100 Year Anniversary page, along with a published ethics and compliance position and a community and responsibility section, all of which matter on the public infrastructure work that makes up much of the portfolio.

The project archive is organised by the same seven capability lines rather than by client or year, which makes it straightforward to judge depth in a specific scope: a bridge owner can look only at highways and bridges, a utility only at civil and utility.
