Doster Construction Company

Doster Construction Company is a family-owned general contractor that Thomas E. Doster III started in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, in 1969. It still runs from Birmingham, with offices in Huntsville and in Franklin, Tennessee, outside Nashville. The firm handles general contracting, construction management and design-build work for healthcare, education, multifamily, industrial, commercial, hospitality and senior living clients. Doster says it has finished more than 4,300 projects across 33 states. In south Georgia, it’s the general contractor on Colquitt Regional Medical Center’s Hufstetler Tower in Moultrie, a four-story addition that takes the rural hospital from 99 to 155 licensed beds, with completion targeted for 2028.

Doster describes its purpose in three words – building lasting relationships – and then puts a number behind it, publishing a repeat-client percentage next to its project and state counts. For a contractor with more than 4,300 projects across 33 states, repeat business is the more telling statistic, because it says the same owners came back.

Delivery methods are spelled out rather than implied. As construction manager at risk, Doster works with the design team and owner from the start to optimise design, schedule and budget. As construction manager as agent, it effectively acts as an extension of the owner’s staff, orchestrating the details against agreed goals and budgets while the owner stays focused elsewhere. The firm also runs general contracting and design-build, and it argues preconstruction is not a front-end department with a start and stop date – its stated scope runs from early conceptual estimating all the way through closeout and post-occupancy warranty management.

The market list is six deep: healthcare, education, multifamily, industrial, commercial, hospitality and senior living. That range, paired with offices in Birmingham, Huntsville and Franklin, Tennessee, explains how a privately held Alabama contractor accumulates work across a third of the country without a national office network.

Doster has been family-owned and operated since 1969, and the company frames its executive team as a deliberately mixed set of skills and backgrounds rather than a single-discipline leadership group. Recruiting language leans on the same idea, describing team members who are like family and highlighting professional development and campus recruitment programs.

Recent recognition points at the bench rather than the buildings: in September 2026 Doster team members were named to the Alabama AGC’s 2026 Top 40 Under 40 list. For an owner evaluating Doster against a national contractor on a hospital, school or senior living job, the question to press is which delivery method the firm is proposing and when it expects to be brought in – the firm’s own material makes clear it prefers to be in the room early.
