Alexander Building Construction Co.

Alexander Building Construction Co. is a Central Pennsylvania general contractor and construction manager founded in 1928, with offices in Harrisburg and State College. It is one of three operating companies in the Butz Family of Companies alongside Alvin H. Butz, Inc. and Shoemaker Construction Co., a group that splits Pennsylvania three ways: Alexander covers the center of the state, Alvin H. Butz the east, and Shoemaker the Philadelphia region.

The firm works primarily in construction management, both at-risk with a guaranteed maximum price and in agency form, and also delivers design-build and integrated project delivery. It runs a separate around-the-clock restoration practice covering fire, water and structural emergency response. Alexander is part of the joint venture with Barton Malow and AECOM Hunt delivering Penn State’s $700 million Beaver Stadium revitalization, which topped out in June 2026. The Butz group pioneered construction management delivery in the Lehigh Valley in 1973.

Alexander works out of 315 Vaughn Street in Harrisburg and 2545 North Atherton Street in State College, and publishes a 24-hour emergency line for each. The company is registered with Pennsylvania’s Bureau of Consumer Protection as a home improvement contractor under number PA173126.

The restoration division’s scope is wider than fire and water alone. It covers sinkholes, board-up, tree removal, structural shoring, water mitigation, fire and smoke remediation, full-service reconstruction, historic restoration, and construction forensic analysis with expert evaluation and opinion for owners and their insurers.

On the delivery side, the Butz group keeps an in-house innovation department. Integrated project delivery work runs on A3 requests for proposal and round-table interviews, a team charter setting out Conditions of Satisfaction, key performance indicators, target value delivery organised into clusters, a validation phase, prefabrication and a colocated Big Room. Lean tools in daily use include pull planning and Last Planner, daily huddles and visual management. Field technology covers drones, reality capture, 3D modelling, data analytics, virtual and augmented reality, and VDC services. The group has also built its own sustainable design and construction tools for the LEED process.

Preconstruction is treated as substantive work in its own right: cost analysis, value engineering, budget estimates, planning and scheduling, constructability analysis, bid packaging and purchasing, carried forward into change order analysis, shop drawing review, quality control and subcontractor coordination once building starts. Safety practice includes orientations for every employee, a drug and alcohol testing policy, safety huddles, daily THINK cards and annual jobsite stand-downs timed to OSHA’s National Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction. The group also applies Prevention through Design, bringing construction staff into design development to engineer hazards out early; at Penn State’s Pattee Library the team ran a PtD incentive programme for subcontractors with a tracking sheet and weekly safety meetings, and the university’s associate director of facilities planning singled out the team’s safety discipline in an occupied library.
