Some specifics behind the gym floor work. Maple is the standard species for basketball courts, rated 1450 on the Janka hardness scale, and Excalibur’s default recoat finish is a 50 percent oil-modified polyurethane, with a water-based finish available where cure time or odour matters.

The maintenance cycle the company publishes is the part a facility manager can actually plan around. A full sand and refinish comes due roughly every eight to ten years depending on the condition of the wood, and takes two to three weeks, longer where custom logos and designs are being laid in. A screen-and-coat recoat runs every six months to a year depending on traffic; the work itself takes a couple of days, but the floor needs a minimum 72-hour cure and ideally five days before it goes back into use. Indoor relative humidity should sit between 35 and 50 percent to keep a maple floor stable.

Two cautions the company puts in writing: do not apply tape directly to a gym floor, and do not run power washers or scrubbing machines on an MFMA maple floor.

Crews are the company’s own employees rather than subcontractors, which is the stated reason the finish stays consistent across a multi-court job. Tony Martin founded the business in 2005 and brings more than twenty-five years in the trade.

The shop is at 555 West 2nd Avenue, Suite B-1 in Mesa, open Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 2pm. The company holds Arizona ROC licence number 237036 and is a member of the National Wood Flooring Association.
