Reaveley Engineers

Reaveley Engineers is a structural engineering firm founded in Salt Lake City in 1972. It’s still based downtown, on 200 South, and runs a second office in Boise. The firm’s own numbers are 58 employees and about 15,000 projects. Its portfolio leans on Utah landmarks: the Orrin G. Hatch federal courthouse, the Provo City Center Temple and the conversion of the 1905 Salt Lake City library into a flagship store. Seismic work on old buildings is a recurring theme. On the Salt Lake Temple Renovation, ENR reported that Reaveley’s engineers took part in the design and review of the seismic stabilization program, which San Francisco’s Forell/Elsesser led for the church.

Ten named service lines sit behind the structural engineering label, and the spread of them is the useful detail. Alongside design work, Reaveley lists seismic evaluation, seismic design and retrofit, structural building assessment, concrete and facade restoration, pre-design, construction engineering, peer review, structural forensic analysis, and something it calls Accelerated Building Reoccupancy.

That last one deserves explaining. After an earthquake or a fire, a building is closed until someone qualified says it is safe. Reoccupancy work is the structural assessment that reopens it, and the speed of it is the point – every day a hospital wing or a school stays shut has a cost. A firm that lists it as a service has thought about being on call for that, not just about designing new frames.

Peer review is the other line worth flagging. It means the firm will check another engineer’s design independently, which is standard on complex or seismically demanding buildings and is a service an owner, not the designer, usually buys.

Forensic analysis, concrete and facade restoration, and seismic retrofit together describe a practice built around existing buildings. That matches the portfolio: the Utah State Capitol complex restoration, the Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Orrin G. Hatch federal courthouse, and the Travelodge hotel and convention centre work.

The firm has committed to SE 2050, the structural engineering profession’s pledge to reach net-zero embodied carbon by 2050. For a structural engineer that commitment bites harder than it does for most disciplines, because concrete and steel carry most of a building’s up-front carbon and the decisions that reduce it are made in the frame.

Two offices, both small enough that the same engineers follow a job through: 250 East 200 South, Suite 1000 in downtown Salt Lake City, and 3295 W Elder Street, Suite 110 in Boise. Fifty-eight people against roughly 15,000 projects is a long institutional memory of Intermountain West buildings, which is the real asset when a 1905 library or a 19th-century temple needs strengthening.

The Salt Lake City line is 801-486-3883.
