Mead & Hunt

Mead & Hunt is a national planning, architecture and engineering firm founded in 1900 and headquartered in Middleton, Wisconsin, with more than 30 offices across the United States. The firm is best known for aviation work, where it handles master planning, terminal and concourse design, airfield engineering and construction administration for commercial-service and general-aviation airports, and it also practices in transportation, water and wastewater, federal facilities, cultural resources and food and beverage industrial design. Mead & Hunt is the lead architect, working with locally based Co-OP Architecture, on the $70 million concourse expansion at Sioux Falls Regional Airport in South Dakota, a five-gate, 70,000-square-foot addition replacing capacity in a terminal that dates to 1968.

Mead & Hunt traces its founding to 1900, when hydraulic and hydroelectric engineer Daniel Mead started the firm in Chicago, Illinois, before opening a second office in the attic of a University of Wisconsin engineering building in Madison in 1904. Mead was known for his advocacy of ethical engineering, later publishing The Engineer and His Code in 1936, and for his contributions to flood-control studies for the Miami Conservancy District and to the Hoover Dam planning committee under a Congressional appointment. Electrical engineer Henry Hunt became a partner in 1946, and the firm hired its first architect in 1949, expanding into food-industry design, a market it still serves. Its move into commercial aviation work began in the 1950s.

The company’s site now lists more than 50 active offices plus numerous job-site offices, with work performed in nearly every U.S. state; its headquarters sits at 2440 Deming Way in Middleton, Wisconsin. Mead & Hunt reports more than 1,400 employees firmwide.

Beyond its aviation and infrastructure practices, Mead & Hunt’s published market list includes education, justice, renewable energy, and state and local government work, and its service lines extend to architecture and interiors, commissioning, environmental services, fabrication and custom manufacturing, and sustainability and resilience.

In July 2026, Mead & Hunt named Kristin Moore, CPA, as chief financial officer, succeeding Dave Schlidt upon his retirement. Moore had spent 12 years at the firm, most recently as finance director, and brings 23 years of accounting and finance experience; in the CFO role she works with the board of directors and executive leadership on balancing growth with financial discipline. The firm has also continued to grow through combination, welcoming Symbiont, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based engineering and construction firm, into Mead & Hunt.
