VMDO Architects

VMDO Architects is an architecture and planning firm founded in 1975 and based in Charlottesville, Virginia, with a national practice centered on education and civic buildings. The firm designs schools, university facilities, and community projects with a strong sustainability bent, and it’s the lead architect on Old Dominion University’s $250 million Engineering and Arts Building in Norfolk. That project deliberately puts engineers and artists in shared space, the kind of cross-disciplinary program VMDO has built a reputation on. The studio’s work regularly lands on regional and national design-award lists for K-12 and higher-education work.

VMDO Architects was founded in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1976 by UVA Professor Emeritus Robert Vickery, FAIA, together with three of his students. Nearly five decades on, the firm has kept an unusually tight focus: design for education. Its three practice areas are K-12 public schools, higher education, and athletics and community facilities.

That specialization runs deep into how the firm works.
