NELSON Worldwide is an architecture, design and strategy firm founded in 1977 and headquartered in Philadelphia. It works across workplace, retail, hospitality, higher education and mixed-use, and pairs architecture with interior design, brand strategy and environmental graphics under one roof, which suits developers who want a single team from master plan through tenant fit-out. The firm is architect and district master planner for The Grounds in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, including the $80 million, five-story, 127,000-square-foot Class-A office building that topped out in 2026 and will consolidate roughly 400 Wake Forest University employees from seven departments. NELSON operates more than 20 U.S. offices and has grown substantially through acquisition, absorbing regional architecture and interiors practices into a national platform.
The Philadelphia studio sits at 100 East Penn Square, a few blocks from 215 Church Street, where Nelson Associates opened as an interior design practice in 1977. That local footprint grew sharply in April 2022, when NELSON merged operations with Daroff Design Inc + DDI Architects, a Center City interiors and architecture firm.
Ten practice areas organise the work: asset strategy and repositioning, civic and justice, education, healthcare, hospitality, industrial, mixed-use and master planning, multifamily, retail, and workplace. Twelve named service lines cut across them, among them architecture, interior design, brand identity and communications, experiential graphic design, signage and wayfinding, design visualisation, sustainable design, and a building verification group the firm markets as NELSON Asset Intelligence.
One of those service lines deserves separating out. Architectural rollout, or architect-of-record work, is aimed at owners with hundreds of locations: a prototype is documented once and then adapted to each site’s code, landlord criteria and local jurisdiction. NELSON runs it as a discrete practice rather than treating every store, branch or restaurant as a bespoke commission.
John “Ozzie” Nelson, Jr. has been chief executive since 2003, having joined his father’s fifteen-person interior design business straight out of a business administration degree. Under him the firm expanded from one discipline to its current integrated platform through more than forty mergers and acquisitions. NELSON says its client base includes over 40 percent of the Fortune 500.
Twelve offices carry the work: Alpharetta and Atlanta, Chicago and Itasca, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Coral Gables, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia and San Jose. Much of the corporate function now runs out of Minneapolis.
Sustainability is handled as a signed commitment rather than a marketing line. The firm supports the AIA 2030 Challenge, targeting carbon neutrality across new builds, major renovations and developments, which matters to owners carrying their own reporting obligations.
The wider portfolio gives a sense of range: The Battery in Atlanta, which NELSON describes as the first mixed-use development anchored by a Major League Baseball stadium; Prologis Georgetown Crossroads, the nation’s first multistory warehouse; and Trilith Live. More recent work includes the Woodruff Memorial Research Building for Emory School of Medicine, urgent care facilities for Jackson Health System, and an outdoor chapel for Perimeter Church.
Owners generally engage NELSON when they want one team carrying a project from strategy and master plan through architecture, interiors, graphics and the signage package.
