Integrated Design Solutions puts architecture, engineering, interior design, and technology design under a single roof, which is where its name comes from. Seven former managing partners of Giffels Hoyem Basso started the firm in 1999, and it works out of Troy and Grand Rapids, Michigan. IDS served as architect of record on the University of Michigan’s Leinweber Computer Science and Information Building, a $145 million North Campus project with a demonstration geothermal system. The firm’s mechanical, electrical, and structural engineers sit alongside its designers, which trims the handoffs that slow multi-discipline jobs. IDS handles education, corporate, healthcare, and civic work across Michigan and beyond.

When the architects, structural and MEP engineers, interior designers and technology consultants all work for the same firm, the design documents that reach a contractor tend to have fewer conflicts between disciplines. For building types where systems are dense and tightly interwoven, that coordination is the whole point.

IDS applies this across a defined set of markets: education, healthcare, commercial, data centers, research and development, sports and recreation, and industrial facilities. Data centers and R&D space in particular demand heavy engineering input alongside architecture, which plays to a combined firm’s strengths.
