HBG Design is an architecture and interior design firm founded in Memphis in 1979 and headquartered at One Commerce Square on South Main Street, with offices in San Diego and Dallas. The practice traded as Hnedak Bobo Group until rebranding in 2017 and concentrates on hospitality and entertainment work: casinos and gaming floors, hotels and resorts, event centers, food and beverage venues, spas and mixed-use development. It employs roughly 100 people. HBG Design is the architect and interior designer on the 100 North Main redevelopment in Memphis, the $309 million conversion of the city’s tallest building into a mixed-use block with 200 apartments and a 200-room hotel. The firm won an ENR Midwest Merit Award in August 2026 for the Wawye Oasis at Gun Lake.
HBG Design’s specialty in hospitality began with a single commission. Memphis-based Holiday Corporation hired the firm to design a new vertical prototype hotel, and that project pulled the practice into hotel work in the late 1970s. The Homewood Suites concept for Hilton followed in the 1980s, and in the early 2000s the firm handled the first brand expansion of Gaylord Entertainment resorts and convention centers into Orlando and Dallas.
The portfolio now reaches across 35 U.S. states and the Bahamas, with individual commissions running from roughly $200,000 to more than $500 million. Over the past two decades the firm has designed more than 35 million square feet of hotel, gaming, food and beverage, spa, conference and event space, including in excess of 30,000 guestrooms and suites. A separate 13 million square feet completed since 1979 covers mixed-use multifamily, historic adaptive reuse, corporate and community buildings.
Each office anchors a different part of the map. San Diego opened in 2016 on the strength of a resort expansion commission at Sycuan Casino Resort, tripled in headcount within its first year, and now works from One Columbia Place near Little Italy. That team leads projects in California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona and New Mexico, and was recognized as a San Diego Best Place to Work by the San Diego Business Journal in 2023. Dallas opened in 2021, following Texas work that began in the late 1990s with the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine, and moved in 2023 to the 38th floor of Bank of America Plaza. It serves clients concentrated in Texas, Oklahoma and western Arkansas.
Beyond gaming and hospitality operators, the mixed-use and commercial side of the practice works for Sovereign Nations, private developers, state and local government entities, public and private educational institutions, and Fortune 500 corporate workplace clients.
