Grimm + Parker Architects

Grimm + Parker Architects has worked in the Mid-Atlantic since 1972 and runs its main studio at 11720 Beltsville Drive in Calverton, Maryland, with further offices in Tysons and Charlottesville, Virginia. The firm employs more than one hundred people and concentrates on schools and higher education, public buildings and multifamily housing. Educational facility planning is its largest practice area, covering feasibility studies, enrollment and capacity analysis, and phased renovation of occupied schools. Sustainability and energy performance run through much of the portfolio. Grimm + Parker is one of the architecture firms on the Barry Farm-Hillsdale redevelopment in Southeast Washington, DC, a mixed-income rebuild of a former public housing site served by a district geothermal system.

Some numbers the firm publishes give a sharper picture than the practice-area list does.

More than 250 design and sustainability awards. 16.6 million square feet of certified green construction. $3.4 billion in green projects. An 80 percent repeat client rate. That last figure is the most revealing one for a practice built on schools and public buildings: school districts and municipal agencies run multi-year capital programmes, and an architect that keeps the work is being rehired by the same facilities directors across successive bond cycles rather than winning fresh competitions.

The office structure follows the market. Calverton, Maryland is the main studio; Tysons and Charlottesville cover Virginia. Phone numbers run 301.595.1000, 703.903.9100 and 434.296.5353 respectively.

Beyond K-12, the portfolio includes health sciences facilities, community centres and residential work including affordable housing. Named projects include Ellen Ochoa Middle School, the Riviera Beach Library and the CSM Health Sciences Center — a library, a school and a college building, which is a fair sample of the civic mix.

Net-zero design is stated as a practice area rather than an aspiration, and that is consistent with the certified-square-footage figure. In the Mid-Atlantic, where Maryland and DC energy codes have tightened repeatedly, a school designed to net-zero targets is increasingly an owner requirement rather than an upgrade, and the constraint usually lands on mechanical system selection and envelope performance rather than on form.

The firm maintains Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X and Vimeo channels.
