Diller Scofidio + Renfro

Diller Scofidio + Renfro is an interdisciplinary design studio based in New York City, founded in 1981 by Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio. The practice works across architecture, urban design and installation art, and is known for cultural and civic projects including the High Line, The Shed at Hudson Yards and the renovation of Lincoln Center. Its buildings tend toward unconventional enclosure systems and plans that reorganize how the public moves through them. The firm designed The Broad museum in Los Angeles, completed in 2015, and returned for the museum’s $100 million expansion, which topped out in May 2026 and adds 55,000 square feet plus two open-air rooftop courtyards.

The project ledger published on the studio’s own site is the clearest picture of how DS+R works at building scale. V&A East Storehouse, a 160,000-square-foot facility for the Victoria and Albert Museum at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, ran from a 2018 competition to substantial completion in 2023 and completion in 2025. In Doha, the 50,000-square-foot Al-Mujadilah Center and Mosque for Women was commissioned in June 2020, started on site in January 2022, topped out that September, opened to the public in January 2024, and added its library in November 2024. The Tianjin Juilliard School in China, 350,000 square feet, was commissioned in 2014 and completed in October 2020.

North American commissions move on comparable arcs. The Broad Expansion in Los Angeles, 50,000 gross square feet, finished design in 2024, broke ground on 9 April 2025 and is slated for 2028. Google Pier 57 in New York was commissioned in 2016 and completed in 2023. The Park Union Bridge for the City of Colorado Springs was commissioned in 2014, lifted onto its abutments on 5 October 2020 and finished on 1 July 2021. Sarofim Hall at Rice University in Houston was commissioned in 2020, broke ground in 2024 and completed in 2025. Two campus projects remain in progress: the MIT Metropolitan Warehouse at 195,000 square feet, commissioned 2018 for a 2026 completion, and Boston University’s Pardee School of Global Studies, 70,000 square feet, estimated for 2028.

University clients abroad include the University of Sydney, whose 230,003-square-foot Susan Wakil Health Building was commissioned in March 2017 and opened in February 2021, and the University of Toronto’s 100,000-square-foot 90 Queen’s Park. Adelaide’s Tarrkarri Centre for First Nations Cultures is also on the books.

Exhibition and installation work runs alongside the buildings rather than after them. Recent entries include Restless Architecture at MAXXI in Rome, open from 25 October 2024 to 16 March 2025; Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto at the Power Station of Art in Shanghai, July to November 2024; and The Corner Problem in Milan, May to November 2025. Larger urban commissions in the pipeline cover Parco Romana in Milan for a consortium including COIMA, Covivio and Prada Holding, NUEVO AZCA in Madrid for RENAZCA S.A., the Pina Bausch Zentrum in Wuppertal, and the 500,000-square-foot Therme Dubai.
