Baskervill is an architecture, interior design and engineering firm founded in Richmond, Virginia in 1897, making it one of the oldest continuously practicing design firms in the country. The firm keeps architecture, interiors and MEP and structural engineering in house, which allows single-source delivery on projects where coordination between disciplines drives the schedule. Its portfolio covers hospitality, workplace and corporate interiors, multifamily housing, higher education, civic buildings and industrial facilities, with work concentrated in Virginia, the Mid-Atlantic and the Southeast and a hospitality practice that reaches nationally. Baskervill is the architect for Dōma, the six-story, 276-unit apartment building that broke ground in July 2026 as the first privately financed vertical building in Richmond’s Diamond District redevelopment.
Six offices carry the Baskervill name: Richmond, Charlotte, Washington DC, Orlando, Denver, and Gdansk, Poland. The Polish studio is run by a resident managing director and fields European inquiries directly, an unusual footprint for a practice whose base is 1051 East Cary Street in downtown Richmond. The Richmond office is SWaM certified.
The firm reduces its process to three words – Ask, Listen, Create – and applies them literally, starting each commission by interviewing a client’s staff, customers, visitors and leadership about mission and space before proposing form.
Beyond architecture, interiors and MEP engineering, Baskervill sells several services that most design firms subcontract. Building envelope and forensics work investigates how roof, wall and foundation assemblies interact when water gets in. Accessibility evaluations cover field verification, condition assessment and compliance documentation on existing buildings. Code analysis untangles conflicts between jurisdictional, state and federal requirements before they surface as change orders. The historic and adaptive reuse group structures projects around Historic Tax Credits and shepherds approvals through the Virginia Department of Historic Resources and the National Park Service. Masterplanning covers highest-and-best-use studies, zoning strategy and feasibility work for landowners and developers, and an architectural graphics group handles wayfinding and branded environmental design.
Current and recent work shows the spread: Treasure Beach Village at Beaches Turks and Caicos, an eleven-acre resort expansion; the TB Smith Community Center; The Shockoe Project, a Richmond cultural destination built around Afrocentric histories; citizenM Austin Downtown; William and Mary’s Integrated Science Center 4; and a manufacturing expansion for Super Radiator Coils. Baskervill also serves as masterplanner on Richmond’s Diamond District.
Internally the firm runs an equity and engagement framework it calls the 5% ASK, structured around seven pillars, and it was named a 2026 Best Place for Career Growth. Virginia Commonwealth University’s director of construction is among the clients quoted on its site.
