A Bit About Duke University Reuben-Cooke Building Renewal
Five hundred and thirteen windows came out of Duke’s Reuben-Cooke Building and went off site to be refurbished. That is the scope item that defines this job.
The $78.5 million renewal of one of the first structures built on Duke’s West Campus is roughly halfway through, with completion set for May 2027. The building runs 76,500 square feet and carries the name of Wilhelmina Reuben-Cooke, one of the first Black undergraduates admitted to Duke.
Project Scope
A full interior renewal producing modernized classrooms, labs and offices inside a Collegiate Gothic shell that cannot change. The 513 historic windows are being restored off site and reinstalled. Custom terra cotta roof tiles matched to the original Duke mix are being replaced rather than substituted with a stock profile.
Between 75 and 120 workers have been on site each day since work began. Duke has not publicly named the architect or the general contractor.
Funding includes a $25 million gift from The Duke Endowment. Project cost was reported at $75.8 million in April 2026 and $78.5 million in June; the later figure is the one to use.
Why It Matters
Campus renewal work is where universities decide what their existing building stock is actually worth. Duke could have built new for close to the same money. Instead it is spending about $1,026 a square foot to keep a 1920s building in the middle of West Campus doing academic work for another fifty years.
The window scope is the honest measure of that choice. Off-site refurbishment of 513 units means shipping, tracking, glazing repair and reinstallation on a building that has to stay weather-tight through two North Carolina winters. Nobody does that to save money in year one.
The job sits inside a wider Duke construction program that also touches Lilly Library, Cameron Indoor Stadium and a campus data center.
