The Federal Aviation Administration has allocated $100 million to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for runway, taxiway and terminal reconstruction. It is the largest single award in a $481 million round announced on 3 September 2026 that covered 191 grants across 36 states and two territories.
Project Scope
The grant funds reconstruction across three asset classes at the busiest airport in the United States: runway pavement, taxiway pavement and terminal facilities. Scope allocation between the three sits with the City of Atlanta’s aviation department as packages are released.
Atlanta took roughly a fifth of the entire national round on its own. Across 191 grants, the $481 million total averages about $2.5 million, so this award is a different category of work from the small rehabilitation packages that make up most of the list.
Why It Matters
Airside reconstruction at Hartsfield-Jackson has to happen without cutting the airport’s operating capacity, which pushes work into night windows and short closure periods with liquidated damages attached to runway availability. That constraint defines the job. It narrows the bid list to contractors with aviation past performance and the crews to staff night shifts at volume, and it drives up unit costs relative to the same pavement work on an open site.
Concrete paving on a live airfield also carries strict cure and strength requirements before a surface can reopen to aircraft, so mix design and batch plant logistics end up on the critical path rather than in the background.
Funding comes through the Airport Infrastructure Grants program, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act line providing $14.5 billion over five years from fiscal 2022. This round followed an $870 million allocation in August, putting roughly $1.35 billion into airport work across two months. That is a fast obligation pace for a programme approaching the end of its authorised window, and contractors should read the aviation pipeline as near-term rather than open-ended.
