A synagogue built in 1962 became a museum in 1982. In 2006 Arquitectonica bolted a 16,000-square-foot wing onto it. The two never really talked to each other, and visitors had to leave one to enter the other.
That is the problem this $33 million project solves. Marvel is architect; Consigli Construction is builder. NYC Economic Development Corporation is running it with the Department of Cultural Affairs and the Department of Citywide Administrative Services.
Project Scope
The main entrance reorients to Grand Concourse at 165th Street behind a new triple-height lobby and cafe. Galleries become a continuous, fully accessible loop across both buildings. The exterior picks up folded copper-bronze panels.
Underneath the architecture is a deep-energy retrofit delivered under New York City’s 80×50 capital program: high-efficiency heat pumps, upgraded ventilation, new wall insulation, triple-glazed high-performance windows and 32 kW of rooftop solar. City funding at groundbreaking was close to $33 million including a $4.5 million Council allocation, with later reporting citing more than $42.9 million in total City support plus State funds.
The north wing has stayed open throughout construction, which broke ground on July 11, 2024.
Why It Matters
Most museum expansions add a building. This one adds circulation, which is harder and less photogenic. Making a continuous accessible loop across two structures built 44 years apart, with different floor-to-floor heights and different structural systems, is the whole job.
The energy scope is the part other city agencies will copy. Retrofitting a 1962 masonry building to heat pumps while keeping a gallery-grade environment is exactly the test case that 80×50 needs to pass at scale.
