Hanwha bought the Philly Shipyard for $100 million in December 2024. Ten months later it announced it would spend fifty times that amount rebuilding it. The $5 billion program roughly doubles the yard’s footprint inside the former Philadelphia Navy Yard and is aimed at a target that sounds implausible until you look at the capital behind it: lifting annual output from under two vessels to as many as 20.
Project Scope
The build adds two dry docks and three new quays on the existing yard footprint, with a block assembly facility still under review. About $200 million has been deployed so far. Product mix runs from LNG carriers through naval modules and blocks, with naval vessel construction the longer-term goal. Reporting in July 2026 confirmed Hanwha will roughly double its Navy Yard footprint, and the yard’s workforce has more than doubled since the acquisition closed.
Why It Matters
U.S. commercial shipbuilding has been a rounding error for forty years. A handful of yards build Jones Act tonnage at costs that make foreign construction look free, and the skilled trades that once supported the industry aged out. Whether $5 billion reverses that is an open question, but it is the largest private bet anyone has placed on the proposition.
For the construction market the near-term read is simpler. Two graving docks and three quays is heavy marine civil work in an active industrial yard on a constrained urban waterfront, sequenced around vessels already on the ways. Philadelphia’s marine and industrial contractors haven’t seen a package like it in a generation. The announcement arrived as part of South Korea’s broader commitment to U.S. shipbuilding capacity, and Sen. Dave McCormick backed it publicly, which matters because the naval work that justifies the back half of the investment runs through federal procurement.
