Quanta Services

Quanta Services is a Houston-based specialty infrastructure contractor that builds and maintains electric power, pipeline, industrial and communications networks across North America. Founded in 1997 and now one of the largest contractors in the United States by revenue, the company self-performs most of its work with a directly employed craft workforce, which is the basis of its pitch to utilities on execution certainty. Quanta reported a record total backlog of $53.4 billion in the second quarter of 2026. It holds the transmission line EPC scope on Invenergy’s Grain Belt Express, the 800-mile, 600-kV HVDC project running from Kansas to Missouri, part of roughly $1.7 billion in Phase 1 contracts split with Kiewit.

Quanta groups its work into eight capability lines: electric power, underground utility, renewables, broadband, specialty, utility performance solutions, engineering and concrete solutions.

Electric power is the anchor. Offerings run from transmission line construction and maintenance through substation and distribution line work, energized services, EPC, emergency restoration, program management, design, permitting and materials management. Renewables covers solar and wind EPC, battery energy storage systems, repowering of existing wind farms, hydrogen pipeline and electrolyzer installation, carbon capture and biofuel plant construction.

Delivery is organized regionally rather than nationally: Canada, Central, Northeast, South, Southeast and West across North America, plus an Australia region. Each region maps to a set of named operating companies, so customers contract with a local firm backed by the parent. Irby Construction and Blattner are two of them.

A few projects give the range. Fort McMurray West, in north central Alberta, covered more than 310 miles of 500-kV transmission line, an expansion at the existing Livock substation and a new substation at Thickwood Hills. Gateway West involved 150 miles of 500-kV line on lattice towers with pier foundations. On the Fisk 345-kV job just outside downtown Chicago for ComEd, drilled shaft foundations for ten tubular steel poles were re-engineered to avoid deep rock embedment and its cost and schedule consequences.

On the storage side, Irby is building the Manatee Battery Energy Storage Center in Florida for Florida Power and Light: 132 battery line-ups and 53,144 individual modules across a site about three football fields in size, tied into a new 230/34.5-kV substation. Blattner completed a 373.8 MW repower in Logan County, Colorado, mechanically overhauling 214 existing turbines in two phases. Quanta also installed the 100 MW Hornsdale battery system next to the Hornsdale Wind Farm in South Australia.
