Douglaston-Little Neck Library — Queens Public Library

New York City broke ground on July 27, 2026 on a $40.2 million replacement for the Douglaston-Little Neck branch library, a 1962 building at 249-01 Northern Boulevard that had run out of room. The Department of Design and Construction is delivering the project for Queens Public Library, with BKSK Architects designing and Universal Construction Resources building. The new branch is scheduled to reopen in the summer of 2030.

Project Scope

The existing structure gets demolished and replaced with a 12,000-square-foot building of two stories plus a lower level, roughly doubling the public space available to the neighborhood. The entrance moves off Northern Boulevard to 249th Street, pulling patrons away from a busy arterial. Mechanically the building is all-electric, with rooftop solar, high-performance insulation and enhanced air filtration. A sloping green roof carries a children’s garden. Inside, the program covers 24 public computers, a 26,000-item collection, and dedicated space for educational programming and community meetings that the old branch could never accommodate. Artist Misha Kahn is delivering a Percent for Art commission, “A Bit of Everything,” which draws on dumpling forms, boulders referencing the Matinecock, and Long Island Rail Road track motifs. The design won a New York City Public Design Commission Award for Excellence in Public Design in 2024. Funding comes from the Mayor’s Office, Council Member Vickie Paladino, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards and State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky.

Why It Matters

Branch libraries are where municipal decarbonization policy stops being theoretical. An all-electric mechanical system on a 12,000-square-foot civic building in a cold-winter climate is a real test of whether New York’s own construction standards work at small scale, and the design commission award suggests the city thinks the answer is yes. The four-year schedule is the uncomfortable number here. A building this size shouldn’t take until 2030, and the gap between groundbreaking and reopening says more about municipal delivery in New York than about the design.
