Meta’s Hyperion campus in rural northeast Louisiana is one of the largest AI data center projects on the planet. The company now says it will put more than $50 billion into the site and the surrounding region, on a 2,250-acre former agricultural megasite between Rayville, Holly Ridge, and Delhi.
Project Scope
Turner Construction, DPR Construction, and Mortenson are the general contractors on the buildout. Phase one targets 1.5 gigawatts of capacity by late 2027, scaling toward 5 gigawatts through 2030. At peak the site is expected to support around 7,500 construction workers. The footprint is so large that Meta and Entergy are building new power generation and transmission to feed it, a parallel infrastructure program that rivals the data halls themselves in scope.
Why It Matters
Hyperion is the clearest example yet of AI demand reshaping the physical grid. A campus this size doesn’t just consume power, it forces new generation, new substations, and new transmission lines that ripple across an entire utility’s service territory. For a parish with a small tax base, the investment is transformational and contentious in equal measure, raising questions about who pays for the power upgrades. It’s also a stress test for whether a rural Southern grid can absorb a single load this big.
