The AI buildout needs optics, and Applied Optoelectronics wants to make more of them in Texas. The company broke ground in February 2026 on a 210,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Sugar Land to build the optical transceivers that move data inside AI clusters and across broadband networks.
Project Scope
AOI has committed at least $150 million to the facility, with room to push that toward $300 million by the end of 2027 as automated lines come online. The plant is expected to create about 500 jobs. Colleyville-based LCC3 Solutions is handling construction along with Atlantic Building Consultant & Services. Initial operations are set to begin in summer 2026.
Why It Matters
Optical networking is a chokepoint in the data-center supply chain, and most of it is made overseas. Onshoring transceiver production near Houston’s engineering base is a hedge against both tariffs and shipping lead times that have stretched for AI hardware. The scale is modest next to a semiconductor fab, but the strategic logic is the same one driving the whole reshoring wave.
