Port of Mobile Container Terminal Expansion

The Port of Mobile is adding room to grow. A $131 million expansion at the APM Terminals container facility builds a new berth and adds a seventh ship-to-shore crane, lifting throughput capacity toward 1.4 million TEUs.

Project Scope
Construction of the new berth begins in 2026 on a roughly two-year timetable and includes additional storage-yard acreage alongside the crane. The added berth length lets the terminal work more than one large vessel at once, easing the bottleneck that caps container growth at a single-berth site.

Why It Matters
Mobile is Alabama’s only deep-water port and a growing alternative to congested Gulf and East Coast gateways. Container volumes have climbed as shippers spread risk across more ports, and terminal capacity is the constraint. Expanding berth and yard capacity now positions Mobile to capture cargo that would otherwise route elsewhere, and it supports manufacturing and distribution growth across the Southeast.
