Austin’s least glamorous megaproject just broke ground. Austin Water and city leaders started construction on a $1.5 billion expansion of the Walnut Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, one of the biggest infrastructure investments in the city’s history.
Project Scope
The plant serves a fast-growing service area that’s running short on treatment headroom. The expansion adds capacity and rebuilds core treatment processes, with upgraded systems designed to protect the Colorado River downstream, where the city’s treated water is discharged.
Why It Matters
As private commercial work softens, public spending is holding the construction market up, and water and wastewater upgrades are a growing share of it. Walnut Creek is a preview of a decade of similar jobs across Texas and the Sun Belt: plants sized for a smaller population, tighter discharge limits, and rivers that can’t absorb the old approach. Unsexy, expensive, and not optional.
