Howard University is replacing its teaching hospital with a new building out front. The $650 million, 252,000-square-foot facility will rise on Georgia Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., directly ahead of the existing hospital that has served the city’s east side for decades.
Project Scope
The new hospital is planned at about 200 beds, with modern emergency, imaging and surgical space. A tri-venture of Gilbane, D.C.-based Corenic Construction and WKM Solutions is building it, pairing national capacity with local firms. The team began lining up trade contractors in mid-2026, with the university targeting first patients in 2028.
Why It Matters
This is the teaching hospital for the medical school at the nation’s most prominent HBCU, and its replacement has been discussed for years. A current facility lets Howard train physicians in modern clinical settings and shores up hospital capacity in a part of D.C. that has struggled to keep it.
