A Bit About Shanghai Grand Opera House, Expo Culture Park, Shanghai
Shanghai’s newest landmark opened on Oct. 17 with Tosca, Aida and Der Rosenkavalier on the opening-season bill. The Shanghai Grand Opera House, designed by Snøhetta with the state-owned East China Architectural Design & Research Institute (ECADI), sits on the Huangpu River at the edge of Expo Culture Park in Pudong. Its signature move is a roof anyone can walk on.
A spiral staircase winds up the outside of the building and cantilevers at its peak, landing on a public rooftop that works as an outdoor stage, a viewing deck or simply a place to meet. Snøhetta co-founder Kjetil Trædal Thorsen ties it directly to the firm’s Oslo Opera House, which also invites people to climb over it.
Project Scope
The building totals about 146,000 square meters, per the Pudong government (Snøhetta’s figure is 146,786). Its radial plan holds three auditoriums with about 4,200 seats combined. Harmony Hall has 2,000 seats on five levels, the Soar Theatre seats 1,200, and a 1,000-seat flexible hall with adaptive seating and staging faces the river behind a glass wall. Local officials also list an Open Stage and a Grand Atelier, and the program adds exhibition and education space, restaurants, rehearsal rooms and production areas.
Harmony Hall’s stage covers 3,500 square meters, one of the largest in Asia, and officials describe its six-grid stage system as the first in Asia, built for fast scene changes. The structure uses 165 MPa ultra-high-performance concrete to carry the long cantilevers and curved roof geometry.
Snøhetta won the international competition in 2016. The design consortium of Snøhetta, ECADI, theatre consultant Theatre Projects and Nagata Acoustics was formally commissioned in 2019, and construction took about six years. Completion was filed in June 2026. Neither the builder nor the cost has been published.
Why It Matters
Shanghai already has the Shanghai Grand Theatre at People’s Square. This is a bigger statement: a dedicated opera house sized to compete with anything in Asia, planted on the former Expo site as the anchor of a new riverside cultural park.
The opening season runs to Feb. 20, 2027, with 82 performances across 47 programs, and the first three shows sold out. Filling 4,200 seats night after night is a harder problem than opening week. The public roof and river-facing lobby are Snøhetta’s bet that people will come even when nothing is on stage.
