Sheffield Forgemasters’ recapitalisation is a 1.3 billion pound rebuild of a working steelworks, paid for by its owner, the UK Ministry of Defence. Two contractors are putting up two very large sheds, one on the existing Brightside Lane site and one on 16 acres of brownfield next door.
The machine shop topped out on July 9, 2026.
Project Scope
Vinci Building holds a 138 million pound contract for the forging line building. It measures 13,800 square meters and stands 40 meters high, sized for a 13,000-tonne open-die press in what the company describes as the UK’s largest facility of its kind. Enabling works began in June 2022. Cementation Skanska installed about 1,500 piles and a 200-meter secant wall, Construction Index reported, after seven months of demolition and remediation. Turner & Townsend is project manager.
The press comes from Mitsubishi Nagasaki Machinery. Swiss specialist Presstrade Technologies will install it along with a 450-tonne rail-bound manipulator, more than 8,500 tonnes of components in all. That starts in July 2027 and takes about a year.
McLaughlin & Harvey is building the machine shop at Weedon Street under a 210 million pound contract. Bond Bryan is architect and Arup the structural engineer. The numbers are heavy even for heavy industry. The building is 30,000 square meters under one roof, 273 meters long and 109 wide, with BHC supplying 12,500 tonnes of steel. Nine gantry cranes run across three spans, one 250-tonne unit and two 150-tonne units in each, and New Steel Construction reports the building is designed to handle castings of up to 360 tonnes. More than 4,000 piles went in first. Twenty-four machine tools will follow, including some very large vertical turning lathes.
Why It Matters
The Ministry of Defence took ownership of Forgemasters in 2021, and the published descriptions tie the new plant to defence and civil nuclear work. The construction programme is what that decision costs.
The dates deserve caution. Construction Index reported an expected summer 2027 completion for the forge building, but the press installation doesn’t start until that July and runs a year. For the machine shop, The Manufacturer reported operations by the end of 2028. New Steel Construction says the shop and an adjacent building are due to be complete and operational by 2029. Read together, those sources don’t put the new forging route in production before mid-2028 at the earliest.
Meanwhile the existing works keeps operating around both sites.
A 1.3 billion pound programme has so far produced two named building contracts worth 348 million pounds. Much of the rest is equipment, and Forgemasters itself says very few specialists can install a press this size.
