The old bridge lasted 108 years and then rusted out. Rail traffic to Rameswaram stopped in December 2022 when the 1914 Pamban bridge’s bascule section was judged unsafe, cutting the island’s only rail link to the Tamil Nadu mainland. The replacement opened on 6 April 2025.
Rail Vikas Nigam Limited built it for Southern Railway, with design by the Spanish engineering firm TYPSA and independent verification from IIT Madras and IIT Bombay. Reported cost figures vary between roughly ₹5.0 billion and ₹5.35 billion.
Project Scope
The bridge runs 2,070 metres across the Palk Strait between Mandapam and Pamban Island. Ninety-nine approach spans of 18.3 metres carry the deck out to a single 72-metre vertical lift span over the navigation channel. The deck sits 12.5 metres above sea level, about 3 metres higher than the structure it replaces, and the lift span raises to give up to 22 metres of clearance for shipping.
It’s built for two tracks, with one laid so far, and it’s electrified. Operating speed is 75 km/h on the approaches and 50 km/h across the lift span. Construction ran from early 2020 to September 2024, with commissioning and safety clearances taking the rest of the time before the opening.
Why It Matters
The 1914 bridge used a Scherzer rolling-lift bascule that had to be cranked open by hand, and for a century that was the bottleneck: opening it took a crew and a good deal of time. Swapping a manual bascule for a powered vertical lift changes the operating economics of the whole line, not just the structure.
The marine environment is the harder engineering problem. The Palk Strait corrodes steel fast, which is what finished the old span, and the new bridge’s service life depends on a protective system holding up in the same conditions. Indian Railways has published stainless-steel reinforcement, polysiloxane coatings and a fully welded deck among the measures. Whether that buys another century is the question the structure will answer slowly. For now it’s the first vertical-lift railway sea bridge in the country, and the template for anything similar that follows.
