Dandelion Energy

Dandelion Energy spun out of Google X in 2017 on a bet that residential geothermal fails on drilling cost, not on physics. The Mount Kisco, New York company designs and installs ground-source heat pump systems for single-family homes, using purpose-built rigs to cut what a conventional water-well contractor would charge for the same borehole. It works mostly in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic and sells through homebuilder partnerships as well as direct retrofits. Lennar is installing Dandelion systems across a Colorado subdivision, which is the test that matters: production builders price to the penny and don’t repeat what doesn’t pencil. The economics still lean on federal and state incentives.

There are two product paths, not one. The standard installation ties a geothermal heat pump to ducted air handling. The multi-split system, introduced for homes without ductwork, connects the same ground loop to wall- or floor-mounted units placed room by room, and is aimed at older housing heated by radiators and baseboards, where the usual objection to a heat pump retrofit is the cost of adding ducts. Both are WiFi-enabled for monitoring.

The physics the company leans on is stability rather than warmth. Ground temperature below the yard holds between 45 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit year round, and a heat-absorbing fluid circulating through the buried loop carries that consistency back to the heat pump, which concentrates it for heating and runs in reverse in summer to move indoor heat back into the ground. The three parts described are the air handling system, the ground heat exchanger and the refrigerant loop that links them.

The published numbers are unusually concrete for this category. A single system is quoted at $18,000 to $25,000, against the upwards of $50,000 the company cites for conventional geothermal installations. It estimates roughly $1,617 in first-year energy savings plus about $500 a year in avoided maintenance, and $30,000 to $70,000 over twenty years. Equipment life is given as more than 20 years for the heat pump and up to 50 years or more for the ground loop, which is the asymmetry that makes the loop the durable half of the investment. On efficiency the claims are more than 30 percent better than a central air conditioner in cooling mode, up to 50 percent lower heating and cooling bills, and up to 80 percent lower carbon emissions.

Buying options have widened past cash. Systems can be bought outright or financed, and a leasing program removes the upfront cost entirely. Coverage has pushed onto Long Island, with Nassau and Suffolk counties named and more than 1.3 million Nassau County households described as having access, and the company counts over 3,000 installations to date. Installations are backed by warranties and guarantees.
