Moseley

Moseley, formerly Moseley Architects, is an interdisciplinary design practice founded in 1969 and headquartered on Norfolk Street in Richmond, Virginia. It offers architecture alongside in-house structural and MEP engineering, interior design and commissioning, which lets it deliver most projects without outside consultants. The firm employs several hundred people across offices in Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and South Carolina, including Baltimore, Virginia Beach, Fairfax, Charlotte, Columbia and Greenville. Its work concentrates on public institutions: schools, higher education buildings, justice and public safety facilities, and multifamily housing. Moseley is one of the architects on the Barry Farm-Hillsdale redevelopment in Southeast Washington, DC, and merged with the Baltimore practice Marks, Thomas Architects.

Twelve offices across four states is the practical fact behind Moseley’s reach. Virginia holds Richmond (3200 Norfolk Street), Virginia Beach, Fairfax, Blacksburg, Harrisonburg and Warrenton. Baltimore covers Maryland from 1414 Key Highway. North Carolina runs through Raleigh and Charlotte, and South Carolina through Charleston, Columbia and Greenville. For institutional clients – school divisions, universities, municipalities – that distribution means a design team within a reasonable drive of the site through construction administration, which is where distance actually costs money.

The disciplines sit together rather than in sequence. Architects, engineers and interior designers work with what the firm calls an integrated approach and a penchant for problem-solving, and leadership includes a Director of Energy and Asset Management – a role that only makes sense in a practice thinking past handover into how buildings perform in operation.

The firm publishes on that theme directly, including work on how engineering unlocks a building’s next chapter, the renovation-and-reuse question facing most public building stock now.

Recent completions include Clemson University’s new Forestry and Environmental Conservation Building. On the public safety side, Chris Roman and Tyler Whately are presenting at the 2026 Fire Station Design Symposium, the specialist forum for a building type with its own operational logic – apparatus bay clearances, turnout times, decontamination zoning.
