Swank Enterprises

Swank Enterprises is a general contractor headquartered in Valier, Montana, working across the state and the northern Rockies on commercial, institutional, industrial and heavy civil work. The firm self-performs concrete, steel erection and carpentry, and runs design-build as well as hard-bid and CM delivery. It is one of the few Montana-based contractors carrying the bonding capacity and federal past performance to take design-build on U.S. government buildings: GSA awarded Swank the design-build contract for the seismic retrofit and modernization of the Mike Mansfield Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Butte in May 2025, a project funded through the Inflation Reduction Act with low-embodied-carbon material requirements attached. Typical work includes schools, healthcare facilities, municipal buildings, grain and agricultural processing plants, and utility infrastructure.

Swank Enterprises has been building in Montana since 1960 – more than 65 years by the company’s own count – and it covers the state from four offices rather than one. Valier remains the headquarters, with additional locations in Kalispell, Missoula and Billings. For a state this size that geography is the point: it puts a project team within driving distance of most job sites instead of staging crews across several hundred miles.

The firm’s stated emphasis is getting involved before the drawings are final. Preconstruction covers budget management, scheduling and constructability review, the aim being to surface the expensive decisions while they are still cheap to change. On design-build work Swank describes deploying design and construction expertise early and sharing knowledge with the architect, engineer and wider project team under one shared goal, rather than treating the handoff from design to construction as a wall.

Sustainability is a named service line, with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design experience listed alongside the firm’s general contracting and construction management work.

The company frames all of it around Montana specifically – projects built on trust, collaboration and craftsmanship, delivering spaces meant to serve the state for generations, in its own words.
