Virginia Transformer Corp

Virginia Transformer Corp has built power transformers in Roanoke, Virginia since 1971, and calls itself the largest U.S.-owned transformer manufacturer in North America. It designs and builds custom units from 300 kVA up to 500 MVA at 525 kV class, covering generator step-up units, substation and auto-transformers, padmounts, rectifier and drive-duty units, voltage regulators and dry-type transformers. Customers come from utility, industrial, commercial, transit, marine, renewable energy and data center work, and the engineering group draws on more than 30,000 archived designs. Six plants run across the United States and Mexico, including Roanoke, Rincon in Georgia, Pocatello in Idaho, and Chihuahua. In November 2025 the company announced a Rincon expansion adding roughly 400 jobs. Group headcount runs over a thousand.

The Roanoke plant was not converted from something else. It is a 145,000-square-foot facility designed and built specifically to produce power transformers, sitting near the Blue Ridge Parkway. In 2022 the company added a two-storey, 60,000-square-foot office park beside it on roughly fourteen acres in the Roanoke Centre for Industry and Technology, with a 12,000-square-foot warehouse, 270 parking spaces and seating for up to 230 staff.

Tank work has its own address. A fabrication, sandblasting and paint facility opened at Troutville, Virginia in December 2013, eleven miles from the main plant. Across all six locations the group’s combined tank capacity runs past 1,500 units a year.

Process investment shows up on the drying side too. Roanoke installed a vapour phase drying system in 2015 that handles two transformers at once and pulls a vacuum down to a quarter of a torr.

The engineering depth behind custom work is the company’s central claim: over 400 engineers drawing on more than 30,000 archived designs, 667,000 square feet of manufacturing area and 67,000 MVA of annual capacity. The Pocatello, Idaho plant came into the group in 2003 from UST West and produces up to 230 kV at 1050 kV BIL. A second Chihuahua plant, 300,000 square feet for medium-power E2X-series oil-filled and dry-type units, came online in October 2022.

Manufacturing milestones mark the climb in rating: a first 345 kV transformer in 2018, a first 300 MVA unit in 2019, and in 2021 a 168 MVA FR3 unit the company calls the largest of its type in the United States.

Demand now comes from renewables, data centres, battery energy storage, EV charging, geothermal and hydrogen alongside the traditional utility, industrial, oil and gas and EPC base. Prabhat K. Jain has led the company as CEO since the 1980s, and the workers’ compensation mod factor sits at 0.9.
