Carrier Global Corporation

Carrier Global Corporation is the HVAC manufacturer founded on Willis Carrier’s 1902 invention of modern air conditioning, incorporated in 1915 and headquartered in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. It supplies chillers, rooftop units, heat pumps, controls and commercial refrigeration across commercial, institutional, industrial and residential construction, and became an independent public company after separating from United Technologies in 2020. Its equipment sits at the centre of the building electrification work now being driven by state performance standards, including Maryland’s, which requires a 20 percent cut in net direct emissions against 2025 baselines by 2030. Carrier is also a named partner of AirJoule Technologies on atmospheric water generation for data center cooling.

Carrier is better understood as a brand portfolio than as a single manufacturer. On the heating and cooling side it owns Toshiba HVAC (founded 1939), Viessmann (founded 1917, originally a steel boiler maker), Bryant, CIAT, Payne (1914), Carlyle compressors, Airquest, Arcoaire, Comfortmaker, Day & Night, Heil, Keeprite, Tempstar, Totaline for aftermarket parts, and UTEC for custom electronic controls. Building automation runs through Automated Logic and Carrier’s own i-Vu platform. Cold chain is Carrier Transicold, Sensitech for supply chain monitoring, and the cloud-connected Lynx platform.

The portfolio looks the way it does because of a deliberate reshaping. Carrier completed its acquisition of Viessmann Climate Solutions from the Viessmann Group on 2 January 2024, adding 12,000 employees and a direct-to-installer channel model, and putting Carrier into the residential and light commercial market in Europe. Max Viessmann joined Carrier’s board at the same time. That acquisition was paired with planned exits from the Fire & Security and Commercial Refrigeration businesses — the company describes the combined effect as narrowing its mandate to intelligent climate and energy solutions. Thomas Heim, previously head of Viessmann Climate Solutions, leads Carrier’s residential and light commercial HVAC across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

For specifiers, the commercial catalogue breaks into airside, chillers and components, packaged indoor and packaged outdoor units, split systems and condensers, and variable refrigerant flow. Controls run from thermostats and sensors up through i-Vu building automation and the Carrier Comfort Network. Design software includes HVAC system design tools, an electronic catalogue, DXF/CAD templates and Revit 3D families — relevant if you are modelling equipment before it is ordered.

Service is sold under the BluEdge agreement structure, alongside start-up services and extended warranty protection, digital connectivity, 24/7 support, consulting engineering and temporary rental solutions. A separate retrofit and modernisation line covers baseline analysis, upgrade solutions and building management work on existing stock, which is where most performance-standard compliance work actually lands.

Named commercial verticals on the company’s own site are data centres, healthcare, higher education, K-12, hospitality and federal solutions. Residential products extend past equipment into indoor air quality — air purifiers, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, ventilators, UV lights and air monitors — plus geothermal systems, boilers and the Infinity control system.

Carrier trades on the NYSE as CARR and is chaired by David Gitlin.
