Blattner Company

Blattner Company is a renewable energy EPC contractor headquartered in Avon, Minnesota, and now part of Quanta Services. The firm builds utility-scale wind, solar and battery storage across the United States, self-performing foundations, erection, collection systems and substation work rather than brokering it out. Blattner handled the wind facility EPC on SunZia, the 3,515 MW New Mexico wind farm paired with a 550-mile HVDC line to Arizona that went into service in June 2026. That project’s 916 turbines, 674 GE Vernova machines and 242 Vestas units, is the largest onshore turbine order in either manufacturer’s history and made SunZia the largest wind farm in the western hemisphere on completion.

The company is older than the industry it now serves. David Henry Blattner started it in 1907 as a railway contractor, and the work stayed in that world for decades. In 1942 the firm hauled rail for the wartime ALCAN Highway project.

The turn to renewables came in 1997 with utility-scale wind. Solar followed in 2009 under the Blattner Energy name, and battery storage later joined both. By 2013 the company had passed 20,000 megawatts of wind built. It now states that it has installed more than 20 percent of America’s utility-scale wind, solar and storage capacity, with its projects generating over 75,000 megawatts of clean energy across 34 states.

Recent named projects give the range: Kern County Wind at 1,547 megawatts, Converse County Wind at 532, Andrews County Solar in Texas at 520, and Papago Storage at 300. Wind, solar and batteries, all at utility scale, all EPC.

Operating nationally at that scale carries an unglamorous administrative load. Blattner holds contractor and electrical contractor registrations in more than 40 states and publishes them individually, among them Georgia general contractor numbers GCCO007653 and GCCO007658 and Texas electrical contractor number TECL28792. Licensing across that many jurisdictions is a standing compliance function, not a one-time filing.

The headquarters stayed put through all of it. Avon, Minnesota is still the address at 392 County Road 50, and the company added a four-storey, 70,000-square-foot expansion there in 2020.

Safety and quality are run as named programs alongside the solar, wind and storage EPC lines rather than folded in as a compliance afterthought.
