Nou Mestalla, Valencia CF Stadium

For sixteen years the Nou Mestalla was a monument to a financial crisis: a bare concrete bowl on Avinguda de les Corts Valencianes, roofless, open to the weather, visible from half of Valencia. FCC Construccion restarted full works in early 2025 after Valencia CF closed a financing package of roughly EUR 322 million, and the job is now the largest construction project in the city’s history.

Project Scope

Completed capacity is 70,044, which would put it among the largest club stadiums in Spain and well ahead of the current Mestalla. By January 2026 the site had installed 30 pillars and 21 compression rings for the new roof structure. A further phase started in February 2026 covering concrete works and external stair cores, with roof installation running into 2027 and facade work and upper-level fit-out through 2026. The opening target is summer 2027.

Why It Matters

Completing an abandoned structure is a different discipline from building a new one, and harder in most of the ways that matter. Sixteen years of exposure means every element has to be assessed before anything is added to it: carbonation depth in the concrete, corrosion in the reinforcement, and whether the original design assumptions still satisfy current code. The 2009 design was drawn to a different standard than the one the finished stadium must meet.

Then there is the geometry problem. The compression-ring roof has to land on a substructure poured before it was fully designed, with as-built tolerances that drifted during original construction and have not improved since. Surveying the existing bowl and reconciling the new roof steel to what is actually there, rather than to what the drawings say, is the critical path. Twenty-one compression rings placed by January 2026 suggests they’ve solved it.

The financial structure is worth noting: EUR 322 million in a single package to finish a stadium that has already consumed a decade and a half of the club’s balance sheet. Valencia is not building a stadium so much as retiring a liability.
