Stratus makes production management software for fabrication-heavy mechanical, electrical and plumbing contractors, connecting BIM models to shop production and field installation so that spools, racks and multi-trade assemblies can be tracked from drawing to hanger. The company works from Larkspur, Colorado and sells into the specialty contracting market rather than to general contractors. Its customer roster includes national mechanical firms such as TDIndustries and Hermanson. In August 2026 Stratus published its 2026 State of MEP Report, Data Center Edition, a survey of fabrication-heavy MEP contractors that reported 88% of data center MEP work now involves some form of prefabrication and that 68% of respondents named shop space, rather than skilled labor, as their leading constraint on scaling. The survey does not disclose its sample size or methodology and was released alongside two product features.
The company was not always called Stratus. Todd Liebbe and Jonathan Umscheid founded it in 2015 as GTP Services, with Stratus as the flagship product; the whole business was later rebranded under the product’s name, and the corporate entity is still GTP Software. Liebbe’s background is in building companies and selling into the MEP market, Umscheid’s in developing trade-specific software. The name itself comes from the Latin for layer, describing software that sits across a contractor’s existing workflow rather than replacing it.
The product line has four pieces. Stratus is the core fabrication management platform. Stratus Field extends it to installation. Stratus Works and Stratus Shift cover the shop side. Three trades are supported: piping and plumbing, sheet metal, and electrical.
The problem the company frames its pitch around is narrow and recognisable to anyone running a fab shop. A contractor invests in coordinated BIM models, then runs the shop off paper exports that go stale the moment the model changes. Stratus’s stated answer is to generate spools, assemblies and work packages directly from the model without redrawing, produce cut lists, bend sheets, labels and shop instructions from current model data, and track every spool and assembly through production, delivery and installation so that VDC, fabrication, operations, field and leadership see the same progress.
Customer results published on the site are specific rather than general. UMC’s manufacturing director describes replacing grease-pen marking with automated Stratus labels carrying full manufacture, install and tracking information, and credits the change with removing human error and improving field trust in assemblies leaving the shop. A separate customer reports spooling productivity increasing by nearly 400 percent after moving off paper sheets.
Beyond the software the company runs Stratus Academy for training, publishes reports and testimonials, and maintains a list of compatible tooling and labeling hardware. Offices and shipping address are 9375 Spruce Mountain Road, Larkspur, Colorado 80118, with sales reachable at 800.385.7131.
