Clearway Energy Group develops, builds out and operates utility-scale renewable generation across more than 25 states, running one of the ten largest clean energy fleets in the country. The company began operations in August 2018 and works from San Francisco with offices in Princeton, Denver, Houston, Phoenix and San Diego. Its portfolio spans wind, utility-scale solar, battery storage and natural gas, along with a community solar business, and it contracts construction to EPC firms rather than self-performing. In August 2026 the Maine Public Utilities Commission selected Clearway to develop an 800 MW onshore wind farm in southeast Aroostook County, a project that would nearly double the state’s land-based wind capacity and which pairs with a separate 1,200 MW transmission line award to Avangrid. Siting and land-use permits for that project are still outstanding and no EPC contractor has been named.
The published operating numbers give a sense of the platform a landowner or EPC firm would be dealing with: more than 450 projects in the operating fleet, 14 GW of gross operating capacity of which the company owns 11 GW, roughly 900 landowners hosting projects, more than 1,000 employees, and over $90 million a year in local community investment. The company describes its assets as generating enough electricity to power two million American homes annually.
The value chain is deliberately kept in-house from end to end. Origination and business development handles long-term contracting across natural gas, storage, solar and wind. Project development covers site diligence, project management, permitting and interconnection, staffed with specialists in transmission and market strategy, land use permitting and real estate transactions who work directly with property owners, local government, utilities and state and federal environmental agencies. Engineering, procurement and construction management sits as its own function, run from the owner-operator side. Commercial operations and asset management carries the projects through decades of running life.
The customer list is broader than the utility-scale label implies. Alongside investor-owned utilities, municipals and cooperatives, the company contracts with corporations, educational institutions, governments, community choice aggregators, competitive retail providers and residential customers through its community solar business.
Community work is structured rather than incidental. Clearway runs named community benefit funds and grant programs tied to individual projects, including the Pinnacle Wind Farm community grant program and the Black Rock Wind Farm annual community benefit funds. It publishes community stories by state for Texas, Hawaii, California, West Virginia, Utah and the Pacific Northwest, and its site teams take the lead on local engagement rather than a central affairs office.
Stated values include prioritising safety, serving communities, acting with integrity, accountability, investing resources wisely, deliberate collaboration and continuous improvement. Recent operational news includes the launch of a 320 MW energy storage portfolio in Utah.
