Allegrone Companies is a construction management and general contracting firm founded in 1921, with offices at Pittsfield Road in Lenox, Massachusetts and on Lewis Wharf in Boston. The group runs four related businesses: Allegrone Construction, Allegrone Masonry, the Berkshire Design Center and Allegrone Real Estate, which lets it self-perform masonry on the historic work that is its best-known specialty. That in-house masonry capacity matters on institutional restoration, where subcontractor availability for skilled stone and mortar work is the usual constraint. New York State’s Office of General Services awarded Louis C. Allegrone, Inc. the $72 million contract to rehabilitate the New York State Capitol’s Eastern Approach in Albany, a four-season rebuild of the 1899 building’s monumental staircase, terraces and drainage.
Self-perform trades and preconstruction
Masonry is the best-known of Allegrone’s in-house trades, but the field crews also self-perform carpentry, concrete, sitework, earthwork and demolition. The company frames that crew as the working arm of its own quality control, which is a different argument from the usual cost pitch: on restoration work it is inspecting labor it employs directly rather than negotiating with a subcontractor over what counts as acceptable.
Preconstruction runs through estimating and cost analysis, value analysis, constructability and constraints review, site logistics and subcontractor procurement. Construction-phase controls include critical path scheduling, cash flow management and permitting management. The team coordinates in 3D using Navisworks clash detection and subcontractor coordination drawings, and captures existing conditions through 3D scanning, lidar and photogrammetry — which matters on buildings where no reliable record drawings survive.
Markets and recent projects
Work is organized around ten markets: education, healthcare, commercial and corporate, multifamily, sacred spaces, municipal, historic and landmarks, cultural and the performing arts, sports and recreation, and retail and restaurant. Recent projects include rehabilitation of the granite walls and coping of Fort Wood, the eleven-pointed star fort built between 1808 and 1811 that carries the Statue of Liberty pedestal; the rebuilt and expanded Doris Duke Theatre at Jacob’s Pillow, a 20,000-square-foot project that took a 2026 Wood in Architecture award; and Laurel Street Residences in Northampton, built with Valley Community Development.
The development side is unusual for a contractor of this size. Allegrone advises on public-private partnerships, historic tax credit syndication, debt sourcing and Economic Opportunity Area designations, and it has applied those tools to Pittsfield redevelopments including the Wright Building and the former Berkshire County Savings Bank.
Preservation Massachusetts has recognized the firm repeatedly through its Paul and Niki Tsongas Awards, for the Howard Building, Onota 74, the Massachusetts Veterans War Memorial, the Elias Brookings School and the 89 South redevelopment, and with the Robert H. Kuehn Jr. award in 2024 for the Shaw 54th Regiment Memorial restoration. New York State recognized the rehabilitation of the 1887 Tower of Victory in 2018.
The business is family-owned and has run continuously since 1921. Offices are at 150 Pittsfield Road in Lenox and 126 Lewis Wharf in Boston.
