Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers turned the building inside out in 1977 and made the structure, ducts and escalators the facade. Forty-eight years later that decision is the renovation’s central problem, because everything that needs abating, treating and replacing is on the outside of the building in full public view.
Project Scope
The Centre Pompidou closed to the public on September 22, 2025 for a roughly 460 million euro overhaul running to 2030. The work covers complete asbestos removal from the facade, corrosion treatment of the exposed exterior structural frame, a full energy retrofit, and an accessibility upgrade across a building that predates every modern standard it now has to meet. Moreau Kusunoki leads the cultural scope with Frida Escobedo Studio; AIA Life Designers carries the technical and MEP work. Visitor circulation is being reconceived and the Bibliotheque publique d’information expanded. Funding splits roughly 280 million euros from the French State against private contributions, including 50 million euros from Saudi Arabia.
Why It Matters
High-tech architecture is reaching the age where its maintenance bill comes due, and Pompidou is the test case. The whole point of exposing the services was legibility and flexibility. The cost is that the building has no protective envelope between its structure and the weather, and the materials specified in the early 1970s include ones nobody would use now.
Anyone who has run an occupied-building abatement job knows the shape of this one. The difference is that the contamination is on a landmark facade rather than behind drywall, the client is a national museum, and the five-year closure means every schedule slip is measured against a public reopening date. The museum is running an off-site programme through the closure, which is its own admission that 2030 is not a date it can afford to miss.
