For three years the robotics pitch to contractors has been labor substitution: you can’t find masons, so buy a machine. Contractors who actually bought the machines are giving a different reason for keeping them.
BuiltWorlds’ 2026 Annual Equipment & Robotics Benchmarking Report, released August 6, found that 79% of surveyed general and specialty contractors reported using jobsite robotics to some degree in 2026, against 29% a year earlier. Improving accuracy was the most-cited benefit at 75%, ahead of reducing manual effort at 63% and safety concerns at 56%.
Accuracy beat labor savings, and that changes the ROI case
That reordering matters more than the headline percentage. Labor substitution is a hard sell to a project executive because it requires believing a machine will replace a specific person on a specific crew, and nobody running a schedule believes that yet. Rework is a different conversation. Every contractor has a number for what rework costs, it’s already in the budget, and it’s defensible in a capital request.
It also explains the vendor ranking. Report author and BuiltWorlds Research Director Audrey Lynch identified three companies that separated from the field: Field AI was rated most highly, Boston Dynamics was most widely adopted, and Dusty Robotics was most piloted. Those are layout and inspection platforms. The flashier bricklaying and earthmoving machines, the ones that actually replace trade labor, aren’t the ones contractors are buying.
“Accuracy’s rise suggests contractors increasingly value the precision and quality gains robotics deliver, alongside labor and safety benefits,” Lynch wrote.
Read the trialing number before you read the adoption number
A doubling in twelve months is more likely a pilot wave than an installed base, and the survey says as much. Contractors reporting they had piloted or trialed a robotics solution on at least one jobsite rose from 12% to 32%. “To some degree” is carrying real weight in that 79%.
The honest read: a third of the reported adoption is experimentation, and pilot-to-production conversion in construction technology has historically been poor. The 2027 survey is the one that will tell you whether this was a purchasing shift or a procurement fashion.
One methodological caveat worth stating plainly. BuiltWorlds hasn’t published the sample size, the respondent mix or the methodology behind these figures; the full report is member-gated. Treat the numbers as directional.
Where the accuracy case is strongest
Layout robotics earn their keep on jobs where the as-built condition doesn’t match the drawings, which is every renovation and every conversion. A gut renovation of an existing tower has no reliable grid until somebody establishes one, and the cost of getting it wrong compounds through every trade that follows.
That’s the profile of work now filling the Manhattan pipeline. The 5 Times Square office-to-residential conversion is gutting a 917,745-square-foot tower and threading new elevator levels into existing structure, which is exactly the condition where a layout error propagates 38 floors.
