Plant Construction Company, L.P.

Plant Construction Company, L.P. has built in San Francisco since 1947, working across higher education, healthcare, commercial interiors and historic renovation in a market where seismic performance drives most structural decisions. The firm handles preconstruction, general contracting, construction management and design-build, and much of its portfolio involves building on constrained urban campuses with occupied buildings alongside. Plant is the general contractor on UC Berkeley’s Undergraduate Academic Building, a five-storey, roughly 78,000-square-foot mass-timber classroom block on Campanile Way with a total project cost of $136.8 million. The firm records the job as an academic seismic replacement building, since it substitutes for classroom stock that no longer met University of California seismic performance criteria.

The company began as Plant Brothers Corporation in 1947, started by brothers Tom, Buck and Dave Plant with offices on Battery Street near San Francisco’s old produce district. Their first job was salvaging a sunken wooden barge and converting it into a duck-hunting lodge. During the Korean War the Navy picked the firm to reactivate and run its Naval Reserve Shipyard in Alameda, and the company also won the bid to build the San Francisco fireboat Phoenix, which it says remains in service.

Leadership passed from founder Tom Plant to his son David, and then to the current management group, a limited partnership made up of long-tenured Plant veterans. The firm today runs more than 100 project management personnel alongside roughly 200 craftspeople.

That craft workforce is the reason the self-perform list is as long as it is. Plant self-performs carpentry, casework, concrete, demolition, doors and hardware, drywall, millwork, rough framing, shoring and site preparation, and the company is explicit that it takes those scopes in house only where doing so helps safety, quality, budget or schedule rather than as a default. Structural concrete runs through Plant Concrete.

Recent recognition includes three awards in 2026 for the historic renovation of Congregation Emanu-El, among them SEAONC’s Structural Engineering Excellence Award in the Historic Renovation category. The firm also placed third among Best Places to Work in the Bay Area for 2026 in the San Francisco Business Times and Silicon Valley Business Journal ranking.

Other projects in the portfolio include Pier 70 Buildings 12 and 15, the UCSF Clinical Science Building, the Bakar BioEnginuity Hub in Berkeley and the Mel Leong Treatment Plant at SFO. Seismic retrofits of buildings that stay occupied, adaptive reuse and residential conversions are called out as specialties.
