The construction robotics pitch has been roughly the same for a decade. What changed this year is that the machines are on payroll.
ENR reported on August 5 that autonomous pile-driving excavators, panel-placing robots and GNSS-guided pile drivers are now running production work on U.S. utility-scale solar sites, with named EPCs and named projects behind them. Solar is where it happened first, and the reason is structural.
Why utility-scale solar broke the automation logjam
A solar farm is the most repetitive earthwork in American construction. Ferrovial Webber Energy is EPC on a 257 MW project in Leon County, Texas, spanning more than 1,000 acres and somewhere between 53,000 and 56,000 piles. Every pile is the same pile. Every module is the same module.
That’s the profile automation actually solves. A machine that performs one motion to a tolerance, tens of thousands of times, with no fatigue curve, is worth far more on a tracker field than on a hospital where no two days repeat.
Webber is running Trimble Groundworks GNSS with remote-operated Vermeer PD10 pile drivers for centimeter-level accuracy. Webber SVP Lance Simmons put the labor effect plainly: “We’ve learned that even with the remote control, the number of people that can now operate the pile drivers has really increased.” That’s the quiet story. Remote operation didn’t shrink the crew, it widened the pool of who can run the machine.
Who is actually shipping
Built Robotics has driven tens of thousands of piles with autonomous hydraulic excavators after more than a decade automating heavy equipment. CEO Noah Ready-Campbell says client conversations have moved from “what if the robot goes rogue” to treating robots as a safety improvement. The firm also started work with the University of Pennsylvania’s xLAB, its first construction-sector partnership, on a small autonomous survey robot that refreshes a site’s 3D topographical model before each shift.
Cosmic Robotics, out of San Francisco, has deployed its wheeled Cosmic 1 unit from California to Texas to the East Coast. It places 60-pound modules within two millimeters. Sunstall, a Novato installation subcontractor, has run the units, and CEO Helge Biernath was candid about the part vendors don’t advertise: “We got an agreement in place with Cosmic on data sharing, so I can protect my IP.” Jobsite robots generate production data, and whose data it is turns out to be a contract question.
Seoul-based XPanner sells a retrofit kit and software for the Vermeer PD10 used by Black & Veatch and other large EPCs. Its X1 Panel Lift cuts panel-placement crews to three people: one excavator operator and two on the ground. Domestic module supply is scaling behind all of it, including the Suniva solar cell plant in Georgia.
The standard nobody noticed
The Association of Equipment Manufacturers published a standard in 2025 defining five levels of construction equipment automation, from full manual to unsupervised AI operation. It reads like a formality until you have to write a spec, and then it becomes the only shared language between an owner, an EPC and a vendor about what “autonomous” means on a bid form.
Retrofit is the part worth watching. Both XPanner’s kit and Komatsu’s late-July partnership with AIM Intelligent Machines build on existing fleets rather than requiring new iron. Contractors don’t replace a $400,000 excavator to try a technology. They’ll bolt something onto the one already in the yard.
