BHDP Architecture is a Cincinnati-based architecture and design firm founded in 1937, with practice areas covering higher education, science and technology, workplace, industrial and retail environments. The firm is co-designer with Flad Architects of the University of Kentucky’s $285 million Agricultural Research Building in Lexington, a 263,000-square-foot facility carrying wet and dry research laboratories, advanced teaching labs, a 250-seat auditorium and a rooftop greenhouse complex. That building consolidates four academic departments along with the Kentucky Office of the State Entomologist and the Plant Disease Diagnostic Laboratory. BHDP works nationally and organizes its practice around how occupants use space rather than around building type alone.
BHDP operates from four offices: its headquarters at 302 West Third Street in Cincinnati, plus locations in Columbus, Ohio, and Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina. The firm is 100% employee-owned through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, with leadership that includes chief executive Drew Suszko, president and chief operating officer David Johnson, and chief financial officer Tim Mueller.
Beyond its higher education and workplace work, BHDP also serves healthcare, government, retail and community clients. Recent projects include the McVey Data Sciences Building at Miami University, with an XR stage, VR track, cybersecurity lab and robotics lab; the Winslow Research Pavilion at Cincinnati Children’s, a 45,000-square-foot facility supporting vaccine research and biobanking; and a renovated headquarters for Safelite in Columbus with a 90-foot skybridge. At Cedarville University, BHDP is designing the Bolthouse Academic Center, a 48,000-square-foot interdisciplinary learning hub where crews recently installed an 84-foot dome.
The firm’s practice extends past architecture and interior design into experiential graphic design, applied research and human insights, strategic services, sustainability consulting and master planning. BHDP follows an eight-phase design process intended to surface a client’s organizational model, culture and long-term goals before design work begins. It has also built virtual and augmented reality tools into that process, using VR to help finalize design decisions on projects such as a regional theater renovation.
BHDP has recently promoted several practice leaders: Daniel Lessing to industrial market leader, Derick Stadge to higher education market leader, and Jessica Gittinger to director of marketing and communications. Prospective clients can request a Lunch and Learn session with BHDP staff through a form on the firm’s website.
