We Energies Put 385 MW of Wisconsin Solar, Wind and Storage Into Construction

We Energies announced on August 4 that three Wisconsin renewable projects are under construction at once, totaling 385 MW of new capacity.

The Darien Battery Storage project puts 75 MW in Walworth County, on the site of a 250 MW solar project that went online in 2025. Dawn Harvest Solar and Battery Park in Rock County pairs 150 MW of solar with 50 MW of storage. Badger Hollow Wind Energy Center adds 110 MW across Iowa and Grant counties.

Together they’ll power roughly 100,000 homes and support more than 450 construction jobs.

The Framing Is Reliability, Not Carbon

Read the utility’s own language and the pitch has shifted. “These renewable energy projects are part of our strategy to strengthen reliability through a balanced mix of Wisconsin-based energy sources, including renewables and state-of-the-art natural gas plants,” We Energies President Mike Hooper said. “In addition to helping meet growing electricity demand, the three projects will employ hundreds of workers with good-paying, union-first jobs.”

Reliability, demand growth, union jobs, gas plants in the same sentence. Decarbonization doesn’t appear. That’s not an accident, and it’s the shape most utility renewable announcements now take.

The economics support it. Load growth from industrial and data center customers is the binding constraint on Midwest utilities, and batteries paired with solar solve a dispatch problem that a gas peaker also solves, at a cost that has moved in the right direction.

Who’s Building It

Invenergy is developer and constructor across all three. The Chicago firm has developed 17 projects in Wisconsin and currently has 1,500 MW of solar, wind and battery storage under construction in the state. We Energies is majority owner, with Wisconsin Public Service and Madison Gas and Electric holding co-ownership stakes. All three projects cleared the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin before construction.

“Bringing these projects into construction is an important milestone for Wisconsin’s energy future, especially in a moment when electricity demand is growing and all energy sources are needed to meet it,” said Daniel Litchfield, Invenergy’s senior vice president of development.

Across its portfolio, We Energies now has more than 3,000 MW of solar and wind plus 600 MW of battery storage in service, under construction or filed for approval.

Sequencing Caveat

Worth being precise about the timeline. The August 4 announcement is the news; the groundbreakings weren’t simultaneous. Dawn Harvest broke ground in June, Badger Hollow in July, and Darien only in the last week of July. The utility bundled three separate starts into one construction milestone.

That bundling is itself informative. Utilities announce renewable starts in batches now because the individual projects have stopped being newsworthy and the aggregate capacity number is what regulators and large customers respond to.

For contractors, the demand driver is visible in projects like the $7 billion Amkor advanced packaging campus in Arizona and the semiconductor and data center buildout behind it. Those loads are what utilities are quietly sizing against, and 385 MW of Wisconsin capacity is one utility’s answer to a question every one of them is now being asked.
