Sterling Infrastructure

Sterling Infrastructure is a heavy civil and site development contractor headquartered in The Woodlands, Texas, organized into E-Infrastructure, transportation and building solutions segments. Its roots trace to 1955, and the company has grown substantially through acquisition alongside organic expansion. E-Infrastructure, which covers site development for data centers, semiconductor fabs and large manufacturing plants, is now the dominant business: mission-critical projects accounted for 92% of that segment’s backlog at mid-2026. Sterling reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of $1.17 billion, up 90% year over year, with total backlog of $4.33 billion, and raised full-year guidance across every metric.

Sterling runs as a parent over named operating companies rather than as a single field brand. Plateau Excavation and Petillo Incorporated sit in E-Infrastructure. Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction, Banicki Construction, Texas Sterling Construction and Road and Highway Builders make up Transportation. Tealstone Residential Concrete and Tealstone Commercial, Dowdy Land Surveyors and Professional Plumbers Group form Building Solutions.

The current shape came from a deliberate turn. In 2015 the business was roughly 95 percent heavy civil, and management set out to shift toward higher-margin, lower-risk work; a strategy introduced in 2016 pushed expansion into adjacent markets. The Sterling Infrastructure name replaced the older Sterling Construction identity in 2022 to match that change. Joe Cutillo is chief executive.

E-Infrastructure now covers the full project lifecycle: planning, design and preconstruction, then civil site development, then electrical and mechanical scopes including maintenance, retrofits and upgrades. End markets are data centers, manufacturing, e-commerce distribution centers, warehousing and power generation.

Transportation still carries the traditional heavy civil catalogue. Highways, bridges, airports, rail, ports, asphalt and concrete paving, water transmission, sanitary and storm sewer, and drilled foundations. Delivery methods include construction manager at risk, design-build, design-bid-build and job order contracting, backed by in-house project design, estimating, engineering, scheduling and project management. These companies work mainly in Texas, the Rocky Mountain states and the Pacific Islands. One current job is the infrastructure for what Sterling describes as the world’s first urban commercial spaceport.

Building Solutions is concrete-led and concentrated in Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and Phoenix. Scopes include slab on grade, podium and elevated deck, paving, curb and gutter, lighting foundations, flatwork such as driveways and sidewalks, and all plumbing phases on new residential builds. National homebuilders use the group for residential foundation slabs in master planned communities across Texas and Arizona.
