Sky Blue Builders

Sky Blue Builders is an employee-owned Denver general contractor working across commercial, institutional and public infrastructure projects along the Colorado Front Range. The firm is structured as an ESOP and has built its practice on vertical construction and architectural scopes, often as a specialty partner to larger heavy civil contractors on public work. Sky Blue Builders is providing vertical construction expertise on the BRT stations and architectural elements for the $280.4 million East Colfax Avenue Bus Rapid Transit project in Denver and Aurora, working with CM/GC Kraemer North America. Median transit stations on a live urban corridor are a distinct scope from roadway work, which is why they were carved out to a building contractor.

Mowa Haile founded Sky Blue Builders in 2007, launching into the teeth of the late-2000s recession as a small, agile operation. His path to the United States as a refugee shaped the values the company still cites, perseverance, opportunity and shared success, and it helps explain why the ESOP conversion in March 2024 read as a continuation rather than an exit. Colorado’s Employee Ownership Commission named the firm ESOP of the Year for 2024.

Six sectors define the work. Aviation and transportation covers airports, transit, bus rapid transit and rail. Federal and defense work includes secure facilities, SCIFs and utility plants. Education spans Denver Public Schools and higher education. Healthcare covers hospitals, clinics and active care environments. Mission-critical and data center work touches energy, utilities and secure operations. Municipal and public facilities rounds it out with public buildings, streetscapes and public spaces.

The through-line is occupied and operational buildings. Sky Blue’s teams are set up for off-hours work, phased construction and secure access protocols, in airport terminals still moving passengers, schools still holding classes, federal campuses and healthcare facilities still treating patients. Delivery method is matched to the risk rather than fixed. CM/GC, design-build, design-assist and firm-fixed-price are all used, and the firm front-loads coordination with owners, designers and trade partners so that unknowns are resolved before crews mobilise.

Scope also runs beyond vertical construction. The company provides full-service construction and construction management across vertical building, civil infrastructure and facilities maintenance, including fast-tracked school renovations, data center utility upgrades and phased healthcare modernisation.

Eighty-five percent of Sky Blue’s clients are repeat partners, a figure the firm treats as its primary performance measure. Its stated mission is “Be Good, Do Great and Inspire,” and five values, progress, creativity, community, impact and innovation, sit beneath the operating principle it calls “Invent Tomorrow.”

Community involvement is longstanding. The Hispanic Contractors of Colorado has credited Sky Blue with more than a decade of leadership, mentorship and sustained support for the organisation.
