Coastal Construction

Coastal Construction is one of the largest privately held general contractors in the Southeast, founded in Miami in 1988. The firm builds high-rise residential, hospitality, healthcare, and commercial projects across Florida, and it’s the contractor on the St. Regis Residences Sunny Isles Beach South Tower. Coastal has become a default choice for South Florida’s oceanfront condominium towers, a niche that rewards experience with hurricane-code structures, tight coastal sites, and demanding luxury finishes. It self-performs concrete and works closely with the region’s high-rise architects and developers.

Three Florida offices carry Coastal’s work: Miami at 5959 Waterford District Drive, West Palm Beach at 1645 Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard, and Tampa at 201 East Kennedy Boulevard. The Murphy family’s Florida building history reaches back to 1955, four generations before the company reached its present form, and Coastal still describes itself as a family owned and operated business with founder and CEO Tom Murphy Jr. at the helm.

Safety is where the company documents the most detail. Coastal reports an EMR well below the industry average and runs a program it calls Safety By Choice. Recognition includes more than 35 Sunshine State Safety Awards from the University of South Florida and a first-place National AGC Safety Excellence Award in the Construction Management Division for projects over 500,000 manhours. On the ground, that translates into AED units required at every jobsite and office, field staff trained in CPR, first aid and AED procedures, safety orientations run in both English and Spanish that issue numbered stickers identifying each trade on site, and project-wide stand-downs covering heat illness prevention, fall protection, caught-in and struck-by hazards. Site safety teams use applications that log audits, check heat index values and monitor weather.

Training runs through the Coastal Training Institute, an in-house corporate program offering close to 40 courses a year across safety, operations, professional skill development and technical subjects. Instruction comes from both internal experts and outside consultants, the curriculum is revised annually against industry changes, and every Coastal employee – field and office – completes required annual training there.

The work splits across multi-family residential, hospitality, commercial and mixed-use, education, and a homes and interiors arm operating as Built by Coastal Homes. Named projects on the company’s own pages include the Porsche Design Tower Miami, Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort, the Aston Martin Residences, The Surf Club Four Seasons, The Plaza Coral Gables, the Thomas P. Murphy Design Studio, and Water Street Tampa among active work. Coastal also lists International Finance Bank in Miami among completed jobs. The company states zero client or design team litigations across its history.

On the employment side, Coastal covers 100 percent of medical, dental and vision premiums for full-time staff, matches 401(k) contributions, and has been named a Top Workplace by the Sun Sentinel. It was ranked among the top 10 contractors on ENR Southeast’s Top Contractors 2021 list.
