A tree growing 100 meters up sounds like a rendering, not a building. Bosco Verticale made it real. The two Porta Nuova towers, 110 and 76 meters tall, carry roughly 800 trees, 4,500 shrubs, and 20,000 plants across their balconies, and when they finished in 2014 they rewrote what a residential facade could be.
Project Scope
The greenery is structure, not decoration, and that’s the engineering story. Stefano Boeri’s Boeri Studio designed the towers around the loads no normal apartment block carries: mature trees in wind, saturated soil, root systems, and the cantilevered concrete planters that hold them. Balcony slabs were thickened and reinforced, planters anchored so a tree can’t be torn loose in a gust, and a horticulturist, Laura Gatti, specified species by sun exposure and floor height. Colombo Costruzioni built it, with the plants pre-grown at a nursery near Milan and lifted into place. Total cost ran about 65 million euros, roughly $87.5 million. An irrigation system fed largely by recycled greywater keeps the planting alive, and an arborist crew, the flying gardeners, still rappels the facades to prune.
Why It Matters
Bosco Verticale proved a green high-rise could be more than a marketing image, and it kicked off a wave of imitators worldwide, some thoughtful, plenty not. The honest assessment is mixed: the towers consume real maintenance energy and the carbon math of the planting is debated. But the project shifted the conversation, showing that biodiversity and dense urban housing aren’t mutually exclusive and that a facade can do ecological work. As embodied-carbon rules like LEED v5 push the industry toward greener building, Boeri’s vertical forest stands as the early, stubborn proof of concept.
